In Virginia, robbery may be charged if one person uses physical force, threats, or intimidation against another in order to obtain property or money.

Robbery is different from theft because robbery involves obtaining the money or property from the victim through force, threat, or intimidation. A charge of theft arises when money or property are obtained with the intent to steal them but does not require any force or threat of force to obtain them nor does it require that the stolen items be obtained from the victim while in his presence.
