Two Metro Transit workers were arrested and charged Wednesday with conspiring to commit theft.
Horace Dexter McDade, 58, and John Vincent Haile, 54, are accused of stealing bags of coins since at least 2010. McDade was a revenue technician and serviced the Metro fare machines and Haile served as a cop for Metro.
According to the criminal complaint, the men would hide a bag of coins nearby one of the Metro stations and return after their shift to retrieve them.
Haile allegedly bought at least $28,000 worth of lottery tickets with the money and won at least 29 times in 2011.
Officials apparently tracked the two with surveillance and GPS devices. It is unclear exactly how long this occurred and how much money the two allegedly stole.
If convicted, each man may face up to five years in prison.
