An English teacher is being investigated after allegedly instructing a student to read a poem “blacker.”
According to reports, Marilyn Bart, a veteran teacher at George C. Marshall High School in Fairfax County, told Jordan Shumate, a14-year-old freshman, to read a Langston Hughes poem he was reading to his class “blacker.” The student said he was singled out as the only African-American student in the class. According to the student, Shumate said Bart told him, “I thought you were black.”
The incident, which occurred last week, is being followed up by the school’s Office of Equity and Compliance. The school’s principal said the school met with Schumate’s parents last Friday to discuss the incident.
